The cornerstone of my wardrobe and a garment that I never get tired of wearing is a blazer. I really like the touch of formality and masculinity that it adds to any outfit. No wonder seeing that blazers were invented and intended for sportsmen and those engaging in the pleasures of country life in the 19th century. The sartorial term blazer originated with the red 'blazers' of the rowing club of St. John's College, Cambridge. The club jackets were termed blazers because of the bright red cloth. And while the colour and texture have evolved many times over the years, the name has prevailed.
Blazers made it into the everyday casual wear of both men and women in the early 20th century. Coco Chanel did much to popularize them and made them a chic option for stylish women. Ever since then, the menswear and preppy style have maintained steady popularity with women. My love of blazers is well documented in this blog. One of my all time favourite looks is that of a blazer worn with denim.
